Day 21 - Inspired by a COLOR

Hi Everyone! Don't hate me! I promise to be back up to date soon. This weekend was so hectic.

So for the manicure, I wasn't really sure what "Inspired by a COLOR" meant. I was looking through my colors and picked up China Glaze's For Audrey. This is one of my favorite polishes, and has always reminded me of robin's eggs. So what did I do? I drew a bird with a nest of robin's eggs.

I used e.l.f.'s Smoky Brown as a base and black Stripe Rite nail art for the branches. As for the nest, I just added some white to the Smoky Brown. For the flower petals I used Zoya's Erika and

Water Marble Tutorial

So I’ve been getting a lot of questions on how I did this manicure:

The method for this manicure is called Water Marbling. Here is a photo tutorial that will hopefully help you all out! There are tons of videos available on youtube, but I know some had more detailed questions so feel free to leave anything I don’t cover in the comments or email me :) [Try not to ask anonymously so you know I got back to you!]

This is kind of long but really informative!

What you’ll need for this manicure:
  • Nail Polish :)
    • I used the following eyeslipsface polishes for this manicure:
      • Smoky Brown
      • Nude
      • Lilac
  • Tape or Vaseline
  • Small cup or bowl
  • Room temperature water
  • Orange sticks or toothpick
  • Paper towel
  • Qtips & Nail Polish Remover (for clean up)
KEEP READING FOR REST OF TUTORIAL! :)

Abstract

I ended up leaving the nail polish I brought home for thanksgiving break home. Big mistake. I thought maybe it would help me concentrate more on finals, but now I’m just concentrating on the fact that I have limited color selection. I don’t know how I’m going to go a month without Seche. Wah.
So anyways, the polishes I used were:
  • *Base Coat* SALLY HANSEN  - Double Duty
  • e.l.f. - Mint Cream
  • ESSIE - Borrowed & Blue
  • OPI - Glitzerland
  • SALLY HANSEN XTREME WEAR - Lacey Lilac, Mint Sorbet, & Pacific Blue.
  • *Top Coat* ESSIE - Matte About You
This one is kind of abstract. I’m not really sure how I feel about it.

Teen Vogue Inspiration

So a few weeks ago I was sitting with my roommates in the living room and I had just brought in the mail. Some girl who used to live in the upstairs apartment has a subscription to TeenVogue and she never got rid of it, so now we reap the rewards. My roommate was reading through it, and I’m not going to lie.. I was judging. My exact thoughts were what 21 year old is sitting around reading Teen Vogue, better yet what college student actually bought the subscription? Either way, after I shamelessly made fun of her I decided to flip through it as well. Go figure. While I didn’t read the articles [Unfriended how to deal with feeling left out, cool style 318 ideas, it girl Alexa Chung, etc. — I guess I just outgrew the articles ]  I did look at all the pretty pictures, obviously. I kept looking at designs and thinking how much more I would like that on my nails than as a dress. Weird, I know. So I ripped out a few pages for nailspiration.

And then…the other day I was browsing tumblr for nail art (as usual) and I saw this post by Miss Ladyfinger. Miss Ladyfinger does amazzzzing nail art, using all different inspirations but usually it is fashion/runway.

I never really thought that anyone else would be flipping through Teen Vogue thinking  "man, that would look good on my nails." I was wrong. We pulled the same photo. Small world. Once I saw her completed mani, I had to do mine. If I had not seen Miss Ladyfingers mani, I probably wouldn’t have had the motivation to actually complete this look. Thanks for the motivation/inspiration!

So here is my version of Diane von Furstenberg’s dress :)

I did mine a little different than Miss L’s but I definitely used some of the tips she gave in her tutorial, like sponging on white over the mint green. :) I actually tried following hers but it just did not work out so I had to switch it up a little haha
The polishes I used were:
  • Seche Base Coat
  • Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear - Mint Sorbet
  • Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear - White On [sponged]
  • e.l.f. - Teal Blue
  • Color Club Nail Art - White and Black
  • Seche Vite

So I used 2 coats of the Mint Sorbet, waited for it to dry and sponged on the White On. I then waited for that to dry and attempted taping off my nail. Whomp. No luck, I ended up having to use Seche Vite after I sponged the white on, which kind of ruined the sponge effect, but allowed me to tape my nails without pulling the polish. I was way too impatient to wait around for it to dry on its own. So then I taped it off so I would be able to have the Teal Blue at the base of my nail, but the polish kept bleeding under the tape and looking like shit. :( Which led me to taping off the base of my nail and letting my tips get all the attention. Voila! Something finally worked for me. Then I just used the nail art polishes to make the designs and that was it plus 2 coats of Seche Vite.

1 coat of Seche would have been fine, but seeing as I picked up the nail polish remover cap and flipped it over forgetting there was nail polish in it I figured one extra coat would be just fine… Rough night for nails.

So anyway, I hope you like! Sorry for rambling :)

e.l.f. - Nude & Wet n Wild - Rain Check

  • e.l.f. - Nude
  • Wet n Wild, Wild Shine - Rain Check
  • Sinful Colors Nail Art - Flower Girl
I really liked the way this turned out. e.l.f.’s Nude is great! It only took 2 coats for full coverage and didn’t look streaky or anything like that. The brush is a bit stiff, but that really helped (me at least) keep the polish on my nails and not all over my fingers. I used a Palladio fast dry top coat, which surprisingly worked pretty well. I wouldn’t say it is as great as Seche Vite, but it dried pretty quick. Palladio’s just doesn’t have that super glossy look that SV has.
I used tape and one coat of Wet n Wild’s Rain Check. It is a metallic bluish-grayish-lilac. Depending on the light it can be any of those colors. I really liked it!
Sinful Colors Nail Art in flower girl was okay. It was a bit watery making it a little hard to control. Obviously if you have too much polish on the brush the line gets thicker, but you could try to get the least amount of polish and it would just run down the brush pretty quickly. [Hope that makes sense!]
Overall, I love e.l.f. Nude and Wet n Wild Rain Check! The Sinful Colors nail art is okay, but worth the $2 price tag.

Eyes Lips Face Haul

Left to Right: Matte, Matte, Copper, Chocolate, Smoky Brown, Nude,
Fire Coral, Mango Madness, Lilac, Mint Cream & Teal Blue

I always do this... Vow to not spend any money until something ambiguous happens and then BOOM! I get an email saying there is a sale or free shipping or I break a nail and think a dozen new nail polishes will make me feel better. Well, in all fairness, new nail polish does make me feel better, but my bank account disagrees.

At least e.l.f.'s polishes are only $2 so it's not like I was breaking my already broken bank. Honestly I had no choice other than to buy them, if I didn't who would?! We can't just let them sit in storage all alone...

These polishes aren't bad for $2. Some of them have a pretty pungent smell which sucks, but my room constantly smells of acetone and nail polish so I'm sure no one will notice the difference. I will say that the swatches and photos of the bottles on the website are seriously misguiding. For the most part they are just lighter than reality, but still.

The nail polish remover pads are great! They are citrus scented which is nice if you're around people sensitive to the harsh smell of regular remover. I probably used 3 to remove polish from all my nails. This is an expensive alternative to buying a bottle of remover, but if you are on the go and like to keep something on hand this is great. My only suggestion would be to wash your hands afterwards, they left my fingers feeling almost oily. I don't know if it was remover residue or if they are infused with cuticle oil? Who knows, but I wasn't a huge fan.

The cuticle oil pen is nice. I just throw it in my purse and use it when my cuticles are feeling dry.

e.l.f. cosmetics are sold at participating Target's, but the nail polish line (from my experience) is exclusively sold online.

The following polishes retail for $2.00 online at eyeslipsface.
Nail polish remover pads and cuticle oil pen retail for $1.00 and can be found at your local target or online.
